For over six years now the Scottish FA's West region have run coach education for colleges and universities in their area, with the support of CashBack for Communities. Every year more than 100 students go through 3 qualifications and are deployed as volunteers within schools, clubs and community groups.
Recently 25 college students from this years crop earned the opportunity to take part in a new ‘Hampden Ambassadors’ initiative. Similar to the Olympics ‘Games Makers’ programme, the volunteers were deployed around the main entry points at a recent World Cup qualifiers at Hampden Park. They received two days of training to give them information regarding the match day preparations and details of their roles in meeting and greeting fans, as well as being able to provide directions and answer any questions.
The idea was piloted for the Scotland game with Croatia and the feedback received from fans who found the service to be excellent, students who enjoyed the volunteering opportunity and colleges who were fully supportive of the initiative. All of the feedback has been resoundingly positive and the idea will employed again at the Scottish Cup Final in May and in future events at Hampden post Commonwealth Games.
